VMMK, the erstwhile Virudhunagar Magalir Membattu Kazhagam is a non-profit organization registered under Tamilnadu Societies Act in 1997. VMMK is functioning in the district of Virudhunagar, Tamilnadu.
A tailoring teacher Ms. K. Vijaya wanted to help a woman who had been exploited and abused by her family for a remedy with the local administration resulted in creation of an institution working for the cause of women, children, youth, elderly and the socially excluded LGBT and the differently abled. The thrust of its interventions for nearly two decades has been rights, empowerment, education, health and livelihood.
The founder Ms. Vijaya is the Vice President of National Council for Labour (NCL), a national level trade union and she also serves in many rights based / legal bodies constituted by the District Administration such as child help line, women help line, eve teasing committee, crime against women, consumer rights protection committee, Visaka committee and free legal aid committee of the magistrate court at the district level for the welfare of the local people especially women and children.
VMMK was awarded the Best NGO in Tamil Nadu in 2013 for its contribution to women development by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
